Why I Removed Onlywire

It’s worse than I thought. Put simply, Onlywire not only doesn’t work — it’s a risk.

Here’s the full story.

For us, it started after we’d been faithfully onlywiring our various blogs and niche video sites for a few months but the results were disappointing.

During that time, SocialMarker had come to my attention through some recommendations from several top sources.

So I did a bit of googling, looking for a comparison or a user review of Onlywire. Here are a few of the sites I turned up:

blog.wired.com alerted me to the Terms of Service over at Onlywire:

“You agree to let OnlyWire bookmark the http://www.onlywire.com site AND the OnlyWire Sponsor site on each of the bookmarking services you are participating with. OnlyWire will only bookmark the Sponsor site link one time.”

Scary stuff. They could send spam along with your link, depending on who the sponsor that day is.

At promote-my-site.com, Oliver is also worried about that, along with other concerns such as “no monetization”. Hmmm, interesting point. Programs that don’t pay for themselves may fall over.

He also found that it was unreliable. Sometimes worked. Sometimes didn’t.

RESULT… I am in the process of removing Onlywire from my sites and replacing it with SocialMarker. Sure, it’s slower to manually work through 30-odd sites (or less if you want to be selective) but the early results are impressive.

Tip: Just add your webpage to 10 social sites per day. It’s quicker but more importantly it looks like natural link growth to Google.

One new site of mine in a niche that most people would never have heard of got to the top of page 1 in 3 days. Now I’m not crediting SocialMarker with all the glory for this because I did a few other things, but I can’t help feeling it was significant.

That niche, by the way, is gold wave tables. In the mining industry, these machines are used to extract tiny (sub-micron) gold particles from the dirt. As the price of gold rises, the demand for these machines will rise.
