This time of year high school seniors tend to get excited when the mailman comes. College acceptance letters are arriving and students are eager to find out where they will be going to school in the fall. College-bound students are also finding out if they will receive scholarships or financial aid for college. It’s the perfect time for students to learn about what’s available to help them pay for their master’s degree.

CBS news created a tip sheet for high school students offering suggestions on how to find and apply for financial aid. The tips outline financial aid programs based on a students need or academic performance. CBS suggests students who scored well on college entrance exams, like the ACT or SAT, contact their future college. The student may be able to get money based on their achievement.

“The fist step to getting financial aid is to fill out a “”Free Application For Federal Student Aid”", FAFSA. It’s required by all two and four year private and public schools. The form is usually due the summer before you start classes.  FAFSA forms are available in high school counselors’ offices, at most libraries or online.”

A student may find that their financial outlook has changed since they applied to college. For example, if a student is a single mother, they should investigate grants for single moms to get additional financial aid. The government and private organizations offer programs for single mothers. This financial assistance may help student moms pay for childcare and expenses related to their education.
